Rikki-Tikki was half drowned from a storm when an english family discovered him and decided to keep him as a pet. The young mongoose soon found himself confronted by two dangerous, murderous cobras, Nag (the word is Hindi for "cobra") and his even more dangerous friend Nagaina, who had the run of the garden while the house was unoccupied. After that first encounter with the cobras, Rikki's first true battle was with Karait, a dust brown snakeling who threatened the boy (Teddy). Although Rikki was inexperienced and the snake, because of its deadly venom and small size, was an even more dangerous foe than a cobra, the mongoose defeated him.

At Nagaina's urging, Nag planned to kill the human family to get the house empty again so they could have free run of its garden. She also reminded him that their eggs would hatch soon (as they might the next day) and that their children would need room and quiet. Nag went to the bathroom to wait to kill the "big man", and went to sleep while waiting. Rikki grabbed Nag by the head above the hood. Nag thrashed about furiously, and the noise woke the man, who fired both barrels of a shotgun into Nag, blowing him in two pieces and almost hitting Rikki. Nag was thrown on the rubbish heap, where Nagaina mourned for him and vowed vengeance.
